Day 9: Who is the greatest?

F=Fast from doing your own will when it conflicts with the needs of those around you (be a humble servant).

E=Encourage someone in your family or a friend.

A=Admit that you have a stronger desire to do your own will than to have a servant’s heart.

S=(scripture) Mark 9:34-35; Matthew 16:24-26

T=Thank God for His ways and His timing for your life

The silence was deafening—they had been arguing with one another over who among them was greatest. He sat down and summoned the Twelve. “So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all. (Mark 9:34-35; Message Bible)

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? (Matthew 16:24-26; New Living Translation)

I experienced a servant’s heart yesterday. What a blessing! Thanks Dee.

A servant puts self aside and listens to the heartbeat of another. A servant looks beyond what is to what can be. A servant washes the muck away and sees the gold beneath. A servant is Christ incarnate on earth. A servant . . .

  2. aamphd says:

What get’s messy is when I believe my will is that of a servant. I can easily assume, that I am providing a service to those around me, while being out of step with GOD’s design, out of rhythm with GOD’s dance in our daily lives.

May my service be awakened by GOD’s prompting. May He lead gracefully as we dance through this day. May I not lose rhythm with His will.

  3. manny says:

i echo your thoughts, allan, and they brought to mind mike yaconelli’s “messy spirituality,” where he, in essence, says that religion can become obsessed with its image and will do anything to protect it, including denial. oh man, am in denial sometimes! i think i’m doing this or that and all to often the truth is i’m not aligned with Him.

he (yaconelli) asks the following question: “what if genuine faith begins with admitting we will never have our act completely together?” man, what if? i hear you when you describe the assumption of providing service to those around me, while being out of step with His design and tripping up while His dance goes on around us.

i pray that i will come out of denial. i pray that even though i may not have my act together, i can fall in line with His will for my life and ministry. lead on, Jesus, lead on…

  4. aamphd says:

Lord God, may this new day find you first in my heart.
May my commitment to you last.
May I find Your Spirit prompting me,
to allow others in front of me at the market check out.
May I open the door for others.
May I give where I see need.
Help me dear God to be graceful and humble in my service,
looking to glorify You in my actions and honor You in my thoughts.
May this new day find you first in my heart Lord God,
and may my commitment to you last.
    Amen.

always a battle. my will vs. God’s will. I loved the part of the text, “is there anything worth more than your soul?” talk about putting things into perspective!!! I pray for a servant’s heart–one more interested in anothers happiness/God’s happiness.

  6. Suzy Wilbur says:

And what would it profit you (me) to gain the whole world and lose your (my) soul? Seriously! Talk about boiling it all down! Is my heart His? Today? Then my will will align with His divine will if I am plugged in to Him–each morning!! May humility be mine. And as to relationships in my life, do I want to be right or happy? I’ve been trying to ask myself this more these days! Thank you God for allowing me to be a work in progress.

  7. Marivic D. McFall says:

I am really enjoying reflecting the devotionals each day. I am learning a lot to put myself down and lift Jesus in my life.
Help me oh Lord not to make my own decisions without consulting you first. Thank you for today’s inspirations that I would rather have You than anything else in this world.

  8. Lord, turn me from my selfish ways. Help me to see the world from Your vantage point. Let be Your will GOD, Your will.

  9. Geert says:

Lord, You left the best place in the known and unknown universe, so one day I can come Home and join You in that place. You are the true servant, and I have so much to learn yet. Jesus All!!!
